Judgment vs. Judgement

Judgment (Matthew 7:1, Matthew-Revelation – Greek=Krinō means to sentence and/or punish) to me is summed up as Pointing out someone’s sin, fault, shortcoming and assuming, without facts, what’s in a person’s heart; then pronouncing punishment or sentence, then the telling of how this person must apologize, fix, reform or conform. All of this being done with a self-righteous; piousness and proud attitude by the person doing the judging.

Judgment (1 Corinthians 2:15, 4:4, 14:24 Luke & Acts etc. – Greek=Anakrinō means to examine, ask questions, discern) is being aware of where someone is spiritually. Not so you can tear-them-down or chastise them; not so you can feel better about yourself by pointing out another person’s weakness. Being aware and recognizing where a person is at spiritually, where a person may have misinformation or where a person is falling short is because you truly do love them, you truly want to see them living life in the fullness of Christ and you even want their fullness in Christ to be more complete than your own.

Do we need to be aware of where people are falling short? Absolutely! If we are not acknowledging and recognizing where a person is falling short or missing the mark with God; if we are not going to them with the Word in gentleness, humility, patience, honesty, accountability, and integrity… Well, guess what, that shows that we could care less about them and their relationship with God. And we, ourselves, are not being obedient to God’s Word.

We also need to use wisdom, guard ourselves, not be over-intentional in analyzing everyone, and never become over-zealot in recognition that turns into a punishing judgment.
