Do Not Judge Me?
Pastor Gregg Crisp

Matthew 7:1-3 says,
“Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. (Pause) For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use. Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.  (Judge=krinō (krē'-nō)
“Christians often cite those verses when being challenged or getting called on a sin problem in their life. You’ll hear, “Don’t judge me” or “The bible says not to judge” and they’ll use this verse as their defense:”
“In my opinion, people use those verses as a way to escape taking personal responsibility and being held accountable. And actually, they are not using the verse in its correct context.”
“This is a great example of why you do not take one verse of the bible and make it doctrine. This is also a great example of why you need pastors & strong leaders to teach the scriptures, and why you should attend solid bible studies.
There are different meanings of ‘Judge, Judged and Judging’ in the bible depending upon what verse it’s used in. Let’s look at the original Greek”
Judge, Judged, Judging: Original Greek
krinō       (krē'-nō) (used in Matthew 7) means: judge, determine, condemn, go to law, call in question, properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide (mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish: —avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to.

“So, in Matthew 7 the meaning for judging here is to condemn, punish and sentence. Let’s look at another verse about judging.”
Key Verse:
1 Corinthians 5:12 “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?” Anakrinō (ä-nä-krē'-nō)
“This verse says we are to judge. However, the word judge here has a very different meaning. Let’s look at it.”
Anakrinō (ä-nä-krē'-nō) (used in 1 Corinthians 5:12) examine, judge, ask question, search, discern, determine (the excellence or defects of any person or thing) properly, to scrutinize, i.e. (by implication) investigate, interrogate, determine: —ask, question, discern, examine, judge, search.
“Wow! We see that the words ‘Judge, Judging, judged’ can have very different meanings depending on what bible verse it’s used in and even depends on the circumstance or person(s) it’s being applied to.”
“You can either have a Condemning, punishing and sentencing type of judgment or you can have a discerning, kind, caring, encouraging and loving judgment of a behavior or situation.”
“You observe, evaluate, compare to scripture, rethink and come to a conclusion. This is the right way to judge.”
“Then you pray and ask God to give you wisdom in what you do. Do you approach the person, or do you just pray for them, etc.?”
And, never does this mean that you go around looking for faults in others. I’m talking about when you notice something.
“Why do we even want to “Judge” our Christian brother or sister? Because we care about them. We don’t want to see them falling short in their walk with God. We want to see them growing into the fullness of God through Christ. Because we truly love them. And always remember this verse whenever correcting anyone…
Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
“You observe, evaluate, compare to scripture, rethink, come to a conclusion and then ask God how you are to act upon it. This is the right way to judge.” -Pastor Gregg

Scripture References:
Matthew 7:1-3 says, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
1 Corinthians 5:12 “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?”
Luke 17:3 Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
Matthew 18: 14-16 If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
Galatians 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
2 Timothy 3:16, 17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
James 5:19,20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
1 Corinthians 6:2,3 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
1 Corinthians 10:15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
